The ship was travelling from Emden in Germany to the Azores when it caught fire.
According to Volkswagen USA, the vessel was carrying 3,965 vehicles, which also included audis and Lamborghinis.
The crew of the ship have been rescued.
The navy, four merchant ships and the Portuguese Air Force evacuated the crew after the fire broke out, and no one was hurt.
The navy said in a statement that the owner of the ship is in contact with the agent to draw up a plan for towing the ship.
No source of pollution has been recorded so far.
An internal email from Volkswagen USA stated that the ship was carrying 3,965 vehicles of the VW,Porsche,Audi and Lamborghini brands.
The number of cars on the ship was not confirmed by Volkswagen, but it did say that there were about 1,100 of its models on the ship.
According to the website Marine Traffic, the ship was travelling to a Volkswagen factory in Rhode Island.
The customer said his car was on the abandoned ship.
