The GOP has a problem in Missouri that could cost it a majority in the Senate.

The former governor of Missouri, Eric Greitens, is leading his rivals for the Republican nomination for the open Senate seat. He resigned from office after being accused of having an extramarital affair and blackmailing a woman with nude photos. Criminal charges against Greitens were dropped because he claimed the affair was consensual. The whole thing left a bad impression on voters. He could lose to the Democratic nominee in the general election, according to a new Republican Party poll. That result would be stunning in a red state.

Party leaders are in panic mode. One of Greitens' GOP rivals got an endorsement from a senator from another state. Senate Minority Leader McConnell is keeping an eye on the situation. According to reports, former President Trump is considering his options.

One problem: Trump has not ruled out Greitens. The former president wants to back a winner, and Greitens is popular among Missouri Republicans.

Some conservatives don't want to endorse Eric Greitens. That is a nightmare, Mr. President. Hugh Hewitt moaned on-air in December that we would lose that seat.

The bigger problem for Republicans is how fervid they have been in embracing Trump, even after the Access Hollywood video and the Roy Moore allegations. Trump has created a hole in the Republicans' political tent by making it seem that sexual predatory behavior is not a big deal. The leaders of the party have made fealty to Trump a part of their identity. Republicans are now hard pressed to convince their voters that nominating Greitens is a bad idea because they have trained their followers to ignore such mistakes. As long as he toes the line, what is the problem?

Democrats have had their own sins in this regard, and they jumped to the defense of President Bill Clinton when his affair with a young intern came to light. It was wrong as well. If you want to argue that Clinton opened the gates to acceptance of Trump's behavior, I won't argue. The issue for the GOP now is that their voters don't mind putting gross men in office, but the electorate still has reservations. Republicans will be rebuked if a Democrat is elected in Missouri.
