The Minnesota Vikings have plans for the 2022. At least for now.
Kevin O'Connell, the new Vikings coach, said at his introductory news conference on Thursday that he expects Kirkconnell to be the quarterback in Minnesota.
He is under contract and I am excited to coach him. It takes all 11 to score points in the red zone. I anticipate Kirk being a part of what we do.
The general manager sat beside O&Connell during the news conference at the team headquarters.
I am excited that he is excited to coach him and lead him, and we are focused on building the team around him to succeed the best we can.
The final year of the $66 million extension he signed in 2020 comes with a $45 million cap hit, the third highest of any player in the NFL. Speculation has been building that the Vikings could opt to move on from the quarterback this off-season due to the financial constraints of the contract of Kirk Cousins, who the team failed to make the playoffs in back-to-back years.
Three years after Kirk Cousins signed a historic three-year, $84 million fully guaranteed contract in Minnesota, the quarterback's $35 million base salary became guaranteed.
If the Vikings decide to keep him, they could either extend him for a second time or let him play out the final year of his current contract.
Mark Wilf, the Vikings co-owner, said that he believed that Minnesota will be a competitive team next season with KirkCousins at quarterback.
Wilf said that Kwesi and Kevin have spoken extensively on it. We feel very confident about that and we are going to work with Kirk as our quarterback and we will move forward from there. We are going to be very competitive in 2022. The goal is sustained success and I think we have it with this leadership.
O&Connell was the quarterbacks coach in Washington during the last season. During his final season in Washington, he threw for 4,093 yards with 27 touchdown and 13 touchdown, as the football team finished with a 7-9 record.
The Vikings co-owner said he was impressed by the coach's background as a quarterback and that he would bring the best out ofCousins.
The vision for the offense is based on elevating the skills of the player. The coach believes that the Vikings can build an offense to maximize whatCousins does best.
Kirk has done a lot of good things throughout his career, and I know who he is.
I feel that is an advantage for us as we build our system, make sure we focus on the things Kirk does well, and help him on a daily basis, which I think is a lot of aspects of playing the position.
He said he will call offensive plays in Minnesota. He took over play-calling duties in Washington after Jay Gruden was fired.
The salary cap for the Vikings is projected to be over 15 million dollars. The new league year and free agency begins on March 16. Time.
