The initial reports about the $100 million deal between Joe Rogan and Spotify were off.
According to the New York Times, Joe Rogan is being paid a lot more than previously reported.
When the deal was first announced in 2020, it was reported that Rogan would be paid $100 million to host his show on the platform.
The three-and-a-half year deal is for $200 million according to two of the Times sources. The deal was already huge when it was reported to be $100 million.
When Neil Young demanded that his music be taken off of the service due to the misinformation found on Rogan's show, it was clear which side he was on. Knowing that the deal cost $200 million makes the decision to stand by Rogan even more clear.
According to the New York Times, the popular Gimlet company has been acquired by Spotify for the same amount that it is paying Rogan for a licensing deal. It's just paying for the exclusiveness. Rogan has control over his show.
When you look at the bigger picture, the music streaming service wanted to become a podcasting platform like Apple did for many years. In October of last year, Apple was overtaken by Spotify as the biggest podcasting platform.
The company is doubling down on the show. The acquisition of Podsights and Chartable was announced on Wednesday.
$200 million to simply host Joe Rogan's show for three-and-a-half years. That amount of money is astounding.
