Packers quarterbacks coach Tom Clements is coming out of retirement to return to Green Bay as Rodgers' coach.

According to a source, Clements accepted the job on Thursday. The contract needs to be signed, but that is expected to be a formality.

A source said that the Packers hope that another move will convince Rodgers to come back, and that the arrival of Clements doesn't guarantee that.

He was with the Packers from 2006-16. He retired from coaching after the 2020 season. He didn't coach between the end of his time with the Packers and the beginning of his time with the Cards.

One of the first position coaches in the NFL was the 68-year-old. He came to Green Bay when Mike McCarthy was hired. The position was held by Clements from 2006-11 and he presided over the Super Bowl season of 2010 and the firstMVP season of 2011. In 2012 he became the offensive coordinator. When McCarthy gave up play calling in 2015, he gave the job of associate head coach to Clements. McCarthy took play-call duties later in the season. For one more season, Clements remained on the staff.

Even though it has been more than five years since he worked with Clements, Rodgers still brings him up when he talks about the keys to playing the position. It happened in the week leading up to the Packers playoff game against the 49ers.

Rodgers said last month that he was thankful to people like Joe Philbin and Tom Clements, who helped him understand leadership and being a quarterback. He talked about a ball he threw to Davante Adams early in the Week 17 game against the Vikings, and he referred to Clements late in the season.

Rodgers said that he learned from Tom that the quarterback had to not throw late down the middle, not make any blind throws and not make any premeditated decisions.

The Pro Football Network reported the Packers interest in Clements before an agreement was reached.

The Bears hired Getsy as their offensive coach last month.

The second coach hired this year has ties to Rodgers. Storer was one of the college teammates of Rodgers at Cal. Storer has more ties to new special teams coach Rich Bisaccia than Rodgers. Storer was with the Raiders for the last four seasons.

A source said that Rodgers had not told the Packers about his plans for the next season.

When asked last week what he still had to weigh before making a decision, Rodgers said: "It just comes down to kind of weighing where I'm at mentally and understanding what the commitment is and kind of making a commitment and everybody moving forward."
