The vehicles in 10 categories that surpass the rest were released by Consumer Reports.

After two years as Consumer Reports top pick in the electric-car category, the Model 3 has been replaced by the Ford Mach-E. The nonprofit group still recommends the Model 3 because of its long range, impressive technology, charging network, and driving performance.

The Mach-E earned a higher overall score because of its road tests, predicted reliability, and owner satisfaction. The price of the Mach-E is just under $44,000.

The Model 3 was evaluated by Consumer Reports and it was found that the Mach-E was better in both practicality and ride quality. The organization found the Mach-E's center touchscreen to be easier to use than the interface of the electric car company.

The Model 3 was dragged down by an average predicted reliability score. Mach-E owners have not reported many problems. Quality issues have been a problem for years for the company.

The Mach-E's score was boosted by a new variable in Consumer Reports. The Ford received extra points because it features a driver-monitoring system that ensures drivers are paying attention to the road when they use BlueCruise, an advanced driver-assistance system that enables hands-free driving on some highways.

Ford has a camera that monitors a driver's eyes, but drivers can use the autopilot feature without looking at the road. Both vehicles give warnings when they sense a driver is not paying attention.

For the past several years,Tesla has dominated electric-car sales in the US, and continues to do so. Now that established automakers see the upside in selling electric cars, they are working hard to launch new battery-powered models across vehicle segments.

The Mach-E will be sold by Ford in 2020 and the F-150 will be sold in the spring. The vote of confidence by Consumer Reports is a sign that Ford and other long-time players have a chance at challenging Musk's company.
