It's easy to forget that there hasn't been a feature film in the franchise since 2016's Star Trek Beyond. The good news for Trekkies is that the hiatus between movies may soon be over.
According to a report, J.J.Abrams has confirmed that Paramount is in talks with Chris Pine to reprise his role as James T. Kirk in Star Trek 4. The report states that Paramount wants the cast to come back. That includes John Cho, Karl Urban, and Simon Pegg.
The first Star Trek film was directed byAbrams and established an alternate continuity that is separate from the TV shows. Quinto was cast as Spock in addition to Pine's Captain Kirk. The success of that movie led to the return of the cast for Star Trek Into Darkness.
It was considered a disappointment that Star Trek Beyond only made 347 million dollars. Chris Hemsworth was supposed to reprise his role as Kirk's father, George Kirk, in Star Trek 4. The project was put on hold when Pine and Hemsworth left the film.
The fact that Paramount is negotiating with Pine suggests that he and the other cast members aren't under any contractual obligation to return. Most of the core characters of the Enterprise crew would remain if the deal could be made. Chekov will not be replaced out of respect for Yelchin.
Star Trek 4 will most likely have a different name when it heads to theaters. The current script was written by Josh Friedman. It is not believed to be the same script as the previous version of Star Trek. We can probably rule out a return for him if that is the case.
Paramount wants to start filming Star Trek 4 later this year.
