Linda Evangelista says she hid for five years after a non- surgical treatment turned her body into a lump.

In an interview with People magazine, Evangelista said that a series of CoolSculpting treatments went wrong and left her permanently deformed.

CoolSculpting and its competitors have taken the beauty industry by storm. The procedure involves placing fat between paddles and cooling it to below-freezing temperatures.

The fat is supposed to go away after a few months after the procedure. In Evangelista's case, the opposite happened; instead of removing the fat, the procedure causes it to grow and become painful deposits.

“After treatment, Evangelista said, she developed a condition known as paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, or P.A.H., in which the tissue in the treated area grows larger and hardens and stays that way. P.A.H. is referred to as the “stick of butter effect,”” https://t.co/GnorfMSzgM pic.twitter.com/TooIQlPAk0

The 56-year-old model told People that she had seven CoolSculpting sessions in 2015 and 2016 and that a few months after her procedures, she began to notice that she didn't have fat.

Evangelista said that she began to diet and exercise more after she tried to fix it herself. I thought I was losing my mind.

The doctor diagnosed the model with PAH after nothing seemed to help.

She said that he told her that no amount of exercise was going to fix it.

A CoolSculpting representative told People that PAH instances are rare, but manufacturers of the disorder reported that one in 4,000 patients experience it. The real incidence may be more frequent because patients may not report the problem due to lack of awareness.

Evangelista told the magazine that CoolSculpting wanted to make it right and pay for liposuction, the surgery she had hoped to avoid, after her doctor contacted them about her condition. She was told that the surgery would only be covered if she signed a non-disclosure agreement, as she alleges in her lawsuit against CoolSculpting's parent company Zeltiq Aesthetics Inc. She paid for the second round of surgery herself.

Evangelista said she had to wear compression clothes and a chin strap for eight weeks so the PAH wouldn't come back. It came back after the first and second rounds of Liposuction.

She said it wasn't even a little bit better. They are hard. If I don't have a girdle on, I will have trouble walking in a dress. It's not like soft fat rubbing, it's like hard fat rubbing.

She said that it doesn't look like her.

The tragic story touches on negative side effects of plastic surgery, as well as the death of Donda West, the mother of West, when she was only two years older than Evangelista.

Evangelista was a model who was made famous by her looks and body, which led to a lot of pressure on her to have plastic surgery. As the popularity of cosmetic procedures increases, so will the number of problems.

Supermodel Linda Evangelista says she has been disfigured by CoolSculpting for five years.
