A San Francisco 49ers win would give us something rarely seen in the Super Bowl: a rematch

The Niners and Chiefs faced off in 2020's Super Bowl LIV.

Championship Sunday is upon us, and we are down to the final four teams. In the 56-year history of the Super Bowl, we have had seven repeat games. About a quarter of the games being played are between franchises that met before. There is a chance that number eight will be added to the list. If the 49ers win the playoffs, they will get a second chance at the Super Bowl regardless of who wins the playoffs.

Three years ago, Jimmy Garoppolo and the Niners lost to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. The same teams could face off again for the title. The 49ers would relish the chance to avenge their loss to Kansas City in the previous game. The 49ers were up 20-10 at the end of the third quarter and had KC on the ropes. The magic light switch was flipped by the Chiefs and they scored 21-0 in the final 15 minutes.

This would be the third time these teams would meet up on Super Bowl Sunday, if the Bengals can slow down the Chiefs and make it back to the Super Bowl. San Francisco won both of the Super Bowls. This would be the third time that the same two organizations would face off in the Super Bowl. The Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers have played each other three times. Both the 49ers and the Bengals had double-digit losses last season. It will have been quite a feat for both organizations to turn their fortunes around so quickly if they are in the Super Bowl. The historian is a fan of the 49ers. Over the years, we have seen other Super Bowl re-enactments.

New England has played the majority of their Super Bowls against three teams. I'm sure most of you are hoping for a better game than last year when the Kansas City game was completely destroyed by the Tampa Bay team. Unless your team is doing the ass-kicking, you don't want to see a big Super Bowl win.
