The Lunar Chronicles YA Series is Becoming an Animated Film

During the early and mid-2010s, film adaptation of popular YA books was all the rage, but with few exceptions and a jump to television, have largely fallen to the wayside for the 2020s. That makes it all the more intriguing that the beloved YA sci-fi series The Lunar Chronicles is being adapted for film, but will be an animated series.

The film was optioned by the studio for an adaptation. The kids flick Ron's Gone Wrong was one of the companies that Locksmith was involved with. The London-based studio is ready to do the series justice, according to the CEO of Locksmith.

Meyer said she was excited at partnering with Locksmith on adapting her work.

Meyer's series is set in the future during a time of unrest between Earth and the colony of Luna, due to a pandemic affecting both worlds. The first book in the series, 2012's Cinder, is about a teenage girl learning about her origins and trying to escape her stepmother. Cinder attempts to overthrow the Queen and make some friends who are also themed around fairy tale characters, including a hacker who is based on Red Riding Hood. A collection of short stories and a graphic novel followed the conclusion of the five-book series.

Cinder's adaptation being animated is the only real news about it. There have been many animated films based on kids books, but teen books have yet to be explored in that medium. It will be interesting to see how Locksmith's animation brings Meyer to life, given the surge of creativity that we've seen in animated works recently.
