California remains the strongest US market for electric-car maker, accounting for nearly 40% of its American sales and more than half of all zero-emission vehicles purchased by Golden State drivers last year.

New data from the California Energy Commission shows that Californians bought 250,279 battery-electric, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in the year 2021, including 137,135Teslas or 45% of the total. The share of battery-only vehicle sales byTesla was 75%, down from 79% a year earlier.

Sales volume for the world's leading EV maker surged last year in the state, though its share of California's ZEV market declined as rival battery models such as Ford and Volkswagen gained ground. The Energy Commission says that the US market share for such vehicles will be three times that in 2021.

The tech mogul had a spat with the California Insurance Commissioner last week. He went after President Joe Biden and the Canadian government. Musk has been using his account to promote libertarian views to his 72 million followers on the site, and he seems to like conservative Texas more now.

Last year, Musk moved his headquarters from Palo Alto, California to Austin.

According to a Cox automotive estimate, 39% of California's US sales last year were for the electric car company. Plug-in hybrid and hydrogen-electric cars were excluded from sales of battery-electric models last year. TheDetroitBureau.com estimates 42% of the 434,879 EV sold nationwide.

The arrival of more competitors this year, including Ford's F-150 Lightning pickup, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Toyota EV6, will almost certainly keep the top EV brand in California.
