Lee Johnson: Sunderland part company with boss following Bolton debacle

Just seven months after suffering a cardiac arrest, Christian Eriksen is set to sign for Brentford and return to the top flight.

The Italian medical authority banned the use of an ICD device in Italy due to a rule prohibiting the use of other devices, so he left Inter Milan by mutual consent.

The 29-year-old was implanted with the ICD after he suffered a cardiac arrest during the Euro 2020 match. He is fit to return to football after completing all his medical checks.

In England athletes are given the freedom to decide whether or not to continue on the balance of risk.

It is not a crime in the UK to play with an ICD and he will be the first to play in the premier league.

Eriksen: I died for five minutes

Medics gave life-saving treatment on the pitch in Copenhagen after Eriksen died for five minutes.

He told DR that he wants to play in the World Cup.

My goal is to play in the World Cup. I want to play. I have been thinking that way all along. It is a goal and a dream.

Whether I will be picked is another thing, but I want to come back.

I am back in top shape. I want to prove that I can play for the national team again.

Christian Eriksen insists his 'heart is not an obstacle', as he targets a return to football and participation in the Qatar World Cup.

It is up to the manager to assess my level, but my heart is not an obstacle.

Martin Schoots told Sky Sports News last month that his client was optimistic about returning to football and was working hard to do so.

World-class creative talent

During his six-and-a-half-year spell with Spurs, Eriksen was the undisputed king of assists, ranking top for creating goals and carving chances.

In addition, the Dane led for producing the spectacular with a league-topping 23 goals struck from outside the box, of which eight of those came from direct free-kicks.

STATS

The graphic below shows the illustrious elite in his company, including the likes of Mesut Ozil, David Silva, Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne, who would surpass Eriksen for creative returns per 90.

In terms of positioning, during his time at Spurs, he was often the top performer and operated centrally midway inside the opposition half, creating chances from every angle.

His creative output declined at Inter Milan, failing to secure a regular starting berth before his horrific collapse at Euro 2020 last year, but he is an undisputed world-class talent and a stellar acquisition for Thomas Frank's side.
