  • President Joe Biden will nominate a black woman to the Supreme Court.

  • Critics have slammed this plan as discrimination.

  • Dick Durbin hopes those who are critical of the president's selection aren't doing it for personal reasons.

Dick Durbin, the Senate Majority Whip and chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, defended President Joe Biden's pledge to choose a Black woman to be his nominee to the Supreme Court.

If African American women have achieved the level of success in practice of law, they have done it against great odds. They are extraordinary people, the Illinois senator said during an interview on ABC's This Week.

After Justice Stephen Breyer, a member of the court's liberal wing, announced last week he is retiring, Biden's promise during the 2020 presidential campaign has come under intense scrutiny.

Black women are included in the reported list of potential picks by Biden.

Democrats immediately called on Biden to keep his promise after learning of the planned retirement of Breyer.

Affirmative action, an approach used in education, employment, and voting rights, among other areas, that considers race and/or gender as a key factor to counter the legacy of policies that openly discriminated against minorities or women, was decried by some Republicans and conservatives.

The senator said that the Supreme Court pick will be beneficial to affirmative action. It would be nice if Pres Biden chose a Supreme Court nominee who was best qualified without a race or gender litmus test.

A Fox News panel slammed Biden's campaign pledge to nominate a Black woman as discrimination. Jonathan Turley is a Fox News contributor and constitutional-law professor at George Washington University.

In response to these comments, Durbin said that Biden's nominee would be an "extraordinary" addition to the court.

He said that all potential nominees would face the same scrutiny.

This is not the first time that a president has signaled what they want in a nominee.

It was Ronald Reagan who made the announcement that he was going to appoint a woman to the Supreme Court, and he did, with the appointment of Sandra Day O'Connor. Donald Trump announced he was going to replace Ruth Ginsburg with a woman nominee as well.

The White House said in a statement to The Mississippi Free Press that President Biden's promise is in line with the best traditions of both parties and our nation.

Republican lawmakers praised barrier-breaking nominees. When Trump promised to put a woman on the Supreme Court, Wicker backed Justice Amy ConeyBarrett.

The oldest of the five granddaughters is 10. The White House hopes that the same consideration will be given to the nominee of President Biden.

Biden said he would nominate someone with extraordinary qualifications, character, experience, and integrity, and that person would be the first black woman to be nominated to the Supreme Court.

He said that it was long overdue. During the campaign for President, I made that commitment.

Republican Senator Susan Collins said Sunday that she is open to whoever the president chooses to replace her.

Collins said during an appearance on ABC News' This Week that he would welcome the appointment of a black female to the court.

She said Biden's promise was different from his predecessors because it came while he was a candidate for president, adding that the court is a political institution like congress.

The nominee will have bipartisan support, according to the senator.

The nominee will be available for you to get to know them, he said.
