The Capital One Venture X rewards credit card was launched in late 2021.

There are many reasons to get this card, from the welcome bonus of 100K miles, to ongoing perks like a $300 annual travel credit, a Priority Pass membership, and access to Capital One Lounges. I was approved for this card instantly, and I know many OMAAT readers are in the same boat.

I wanted to focus on the single benefit that should help offset the annual fee of the Capital One Venture X, which is the $300 annual travel credit. Let's get into the details of how this works.

How does the Venture X $300 annual travel credit work?

A $300 annual travel credit can be redeemed through Capital One Travel. What you need to know about that is here.

  • The credit applies each cardmember year (or anniversary year, if you prefer), including the year in which you open the card; the credit timing isn’t based on the calendar year
  • The credit can be used across one or multiple transactions, until the $300 limit is reached
  • There’s no registration required to use the $300 annual travel credit
  • Any purchase through Capital One Travel qualifies toward using this credit, so this credit can be used toward flights, hotels, or rental cars
  • The credit will generally appear in your account within one to seven business days of making an eligible purchase
  • If the credited Capital One Travel purchase is canceled, the statement credit may be removed from your account, though can be reissued on any past or future Capital One Travel purchase of up to $300

What travel can you book through Capital One Travel?

Capital One Travel is the travel portal of Capital One. The portal is powered by Hopper and Capital One is acting as the travel agent. Capital One Travel can be used to book everything from flights to hotels.

Capital One Travel is the best travel portal of the major credit card companies and I am not a fan of using travel portals. You can find flights, hotels, and rental cars.

There are some nifty features on the portal. I wish airlines would show the dates with the best prices more often.

In my opinion, the option to filter results is better than any other portal out there.

If you want to apply your $300 annual travel credit toward a purchase, you need to make the purchase with your card, and the statement credit will post automatically.

You can earn a lot of miles for Capital One Travel purchases if you keep in mind that the Venture X is also rewarding. The card has something to offer.

  • 10x Venture miles on hotels and rental cars booked via Capital One Travel
  • 5x Venture miles on flights booked via Capital One Travel

But isn’t booking through credit card travel portals annoying?

I hear you, some people think they don't want to book through a travel portal. I rarely use travel portals. There are drawbacks to using a travel portal.

  • On the flight front, in the event of schedule changes or wanting to cancel, it can be easier to do so if you book direct, especially in an era where airlines largely allow free ticket changes
  • On the hotel front, you don’t usually receive elite perks or earn points when booking through a third party
  • On the rental car front, there are often discount codes available online that can’t be used if booking through a portal

I value this credit close to face value, and have no issues using it. What is my strategy? To keep things simple, my general plan is to book a single flight that costs at least $300 and is 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465.

When booking flights through a portal, you earn points and receive elite perks, but the pricing is almost always the same. The cost to book this way is limited.

I don't see how having to book through Capital One Travel is a big deal, and most people shouldn't have any issues maximizing this.

Do you earn Venture miles when using the travel credit?

I used my Capital One Travel credit and learned something. I used the credit to book a $458 airline ticket through Capital One Travel, which was the same price as it was through the airline. The credit was posted to my account three days after the purchase.

This is a pleasant surprise. Capital One Venture X offers bonus points on purchases through Capital One Travel.

  • 10x Venture miles on hotels and rental cars booked via Capital One Travel
  • 5x Venture miles on flights booked via Capital One Travel

I received a travel credit for the entire purchase amount, but I had 5x Venture miles post for it. You will earn Venture miles for using your $300 travel credit, depending on what you spend on.

I followed up with Capital One to make sure it wasn't a glitch. When using the $300 travel credit, cardmembers will earn Venture miles for the cost of the purchase. This card is set apart by that.

How does this compare to travel credits on other cards?

How does the Capital One Venture X $300 annual travel credit compare to other premium cards? Just to compare.

I think that the Capital One travel credit is easier to use than the American Express travel credit. Since Chase doesn't award points on those purchases, the fact that you earn 10x Venture miles even for purchases does set the card apart.

This does not tell the full story of the card's value proposition.

  • The Venture X has by far the lowest annual fee of the three cards
  • The $300 annual travel credit is only one of the annual perks the card offers — the card also offers 10,000 anniversary Capital One bonus miles, which can be redeemed for $100 worth of travel, or can be transfered to airline & hotel partners at a ratio of up to 1:1
  • For savvy travelers, the $300 travel credit plus 10,000 bonus miles should be worth more than the card’s $395 annual fee, not even factoring in anything else
The Venture X also offers 10K bonus anniversary miles

The Capital One Venture X makes a lot of money. The $300 annual travel credit is one of the things that offsets the $395 annual fee, and it can be used for virtually any purchase with Capital One Travel. You earn Venture miles for booking through Capital One Travel.

This shouldn't be hard to maximize on a flight, hotel, or rental car, even if there is a slight hassle factor to using a portal. I will get a $300 statement credit for booking a $300+ flight every year through the portal.
