Luis Diaz: Liverpool sign Porto winger on five-and-a-half-year deal for initial fee of £37m

The initial fee for Luis Diaz was 37 million dollars.

The player has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with the side and will wear the number 23 shirt.

If add-ons are triggered during his time at Anfield, the fee for him could rise to as much as 49 million dollars.

A top target for the manager in the summer was the player, but interest from Spurs this month accelerated their plans.

Spurs were willing to pay up to 46 million dollars for the winger, but he preferred a move to the Reds.

As he is on international duty with his country, he underwent a medical in Argentina.

He played in both of Porto's matches against the Reds this season, but was not able to help them avoid defeats in September and November.

As he took the reins in negotiations, the deal represents a big coup for Julian Ward, who is set to succeed Michael Edwards in the summer.

He is unlikely to arrive in the UK until the end of next week because he needs a work permit.

The next match for the Reds is at home to the Welsh team in the FA Cup.

Luis will be one of the good guys when he pulls on his new shirt for the first time. The number was assigned to two legends of the club, Jamie Carragher andRobbie Fowler, while Emre Can and Xherdan Shaqiri have received it recently.

Analysis: Liverpool rebuilding their attack

Adam Bate is on Sky Sports.

While Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah are away at the Africa Cup of Nations, they have acted to future-proof their forward line. Roberto Firmino turned 30 in October and will be joined later this year by Mane and Salah. The balance of the attack needs to shift because the trio are legendary figures.

Sky Sports' Nick Wright explains what Luis Diaz will bring to Liverpool

Diogo Jota took minutes from Firmino this season. As he too operates in that left channel, Luis Diaz could mean the same for him. The Senegalese player had gone nine games without a goal before he scored against the Blues.

It was a big challenge for the team that won the title to transition away from it. There is a person who can help. He is coming into his peak years and appears an astute signing, a player with an appetite to prove himself in the premier league.

If the signing is a success, and the transition is smooth, the club will believe they are building a new forward line for the future. Maybe the next great team is being constructed.

PASSING

The maps below show his goal threat in the past two seasons and show that he is the most potent from his left channel.

SHOTS AND CHANCES

His most striking attribute is participation in overall play, with above-average numbers for passes in the final third, but the graphic below suggests he also tracks back to support the team.

When looking at his goal and passing averages, he emerges among an elite group of players in Europe's top leagues, with returns on par with Benzema and Salah.

His heat map shows his work-rate with a lot of activity in his defensive half, while his ability to get possession high up the pitch would suit a high-press style.
