Luke List earns wild playoff victory at Farmers Insurance Open (2:20)

At the Farmers Insurance Open, List defeated Zalatoris in a playoff to win his first tour victory. The song is called "2:20."

9:12 PM ET

After he finished his final round eight groups ahead of the other leaders, List got a cookie to occupy his 3-year-old daughter when he settled down to watch his family.

Ryann List got an even better treat two hours later in California.

List said that she wanted a trophy for a long time.

List won the Farmers Insurance Open on the first hole of a playoff with Will Zalatoris after the sun had set.

List began the final round five shots back of leaders Zalatoris and Day and had to wait nearly two hours to see if he had a chance for the first win of his career.

List said that he really believed he could win on this course, and it was a dream come true.

After six years on the PGA Tour, he was interrupted by a two-year trip back to the Web.com Tour.

List said that you wonder if it will be your turn. I worked so hard with my coach and I have done the right things. I have an amazing team that supports me.

Zalatoris had a chance to win his first career victory when he missed an 8-foot putt on the 18th. List's 131-yard approach shot to within a foot of the cup was the highlight of the playoff.

After List tapped in and Zalatoris missed his putt, List held Ryann and his wife held Harrison. List thinks his daughter might be interested in trophies because she believes they contain candy, but the Farmers trophy is a replica of the rare Torrey pine tree.

List laughed and said that the sculpture didn't look like he could fit any candy in it. She said, "Oh, flowers!"

The fourth playoff in the past 11 years at the Farmers was set up by Zalatoris and List. Zalatoris shot a nervy final-round 71, finishing with 12 straight pars.

The Masters runner-up will rue his final shot of regulation. The 8-footer left his putter straight, but slowed and hopped to the left in the final inches.

Zalatoris said that he fought like hell all day. I thought I did well today. I thought I made it when I hit the putt on the 72nd hole. I need a hair more speed.

A group of five players were two shots back, including top-ranked Jon Rahm, Day, and Tringale.

List punched his ticket to the Masters for the first time as a pro. He was the runner-up in the 2004 U.S. Amateur and played there in 2005.

List made four straight birdies on the front nine, but he really got going when he holed out from the fairway on the 12th.

List missed a 4-foot par putt on the 17th that would have given him a share of the lead at 15 under with Zalatoris barely approaching the turn.

He waited after finishing with a 13 footer on the 18th. List chatted with his family in the dining room and even got a cookie for Ryann before warming up in the fading California sun.

The tournament ended on Saturday to avoid a conflict with the football games on Sunday. The leaders appeared to be headed for a Sunday finish anyway, thanks to the crowded leaderboard and the slow pace of play that raised the chances of a playoff that couldn't be resolved before sunset on the north San Diego coast.

After finishing in a sixth-place tie at The American Express last week, Zalatoris' career is surging. The Texan, who played at Wake Forest on an Arnold Palmer scholarship, had a steady final round, even if his 12th straight par was a heartbreaker.

Zalatoris was the leader all day. The two-time Torrey Pines winner was one shot off the lead when he missed a par putt on the 15th. He missed a 17-foot putt on the 18th that would have brought him back to the leaders.

Day eagled the 14th, holing out from 118 yards with a backspin that took it straight into the hole, to jump into a share of the lead.
