Evander Kane scored his first goal in an Eskimos uniform on Saturday night, capping a busy week for the veteran forward.

Kane, brought in to add balance to a star-laden offense that features Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl but has struggled with its depth, scored 11:21 into his first period as an Oiler.

The Eskimos scored three times in less than two minutes in the first and went on to win their fourth straight game.

Kane said it was nice to contribute on a new team and show what he can do. Everyone took off after that.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Derek Ryan also scored for the Eskimos. Duncan Keith and Warren Foegele each had two assists. The road team had 21 saves made by Stuart Skinner.

Kane said that it made it easy for the team to roll lines.

The San Jose Sharks dumped the 30-year-old forward's contract because of numerous issues. There will be questions about his past, from suspension due to violations of COVID-19 protocols, to a bankruptcy and a gambling addiction. For one night, the focus was on hockey.

Kane said that when you get onto the ice, you can put everything else to bed.

Josh Anderson and Tyler Toffoli scored for Montreal. Sam Montembeault had 16 shots and allowed six goals. Cayden Primeau made seven saves.

Kane, a two-time 30-goal scorer who has had at least 20 in a season five other times, will likely be used in several different line combinations. After starting the season with five straight wins, the Oilers began Saturday night on the outside of the Western Conference playoff picture.

When a new player comes in, they press, they want to make sure they contribute to their new team, and it's great for him to jump in and get one early. He hasn't played in a while, and he has to get up to speed. It is good to get him in the lineup.
