The Batman's Matt Reeves on the Batfleck Film That Nearly Was

Robert Pattinson in full costume for The Batman, drenched in rain.

The upcoming film by Matt Reeves is what the movie almost ended up being as The Batman gets closer to release. It was supposed to star and be directed by Ben Affleck, the Dark Knight of the DCEU, before Robert Pattinson was cast.

When the actor could no longer commit to directing the film, Warner Bros. approached him to direct it. The script is almost James Bond-ian, with deep connections to the DCEU and characters from other films and comics making an appearance. At least one of them would have ended up being Deathstroke. The script was enjoyable, but it wasn't the take on the character that he wanted to make.

He described his pitch to WB, one that he had had cooking in his head for a long time, and he was fully prepared to turn Warner Bros. down. It wasn't going to be another origin story, not with Ben already in the character, and he was surprised at WB's willingness to work with him. WB wanted to work with him so he could finish his obligations.

By the time The Batman was ready for release, things got messed up by the fact that Affleck left DC films to focus on becoming sober. After that point, the rest is history: Pattinson is in the cowl, and the other two have moved on to other projects. It would have been interesting to see what a Batman movie would look like. Maybe they could make running in front of the Batsignal look like Bond's gun barrel intros.
