More than 42 years after the first graphic novel was released, a collection of the complete Maus titles is the top-selling graphic novel on Amazon and ranked 16th on the platform's list of best-selling book s of all genres.

The vote by the school board in Tennessee to ban the novel from its eighth- grade classrooms resulted in a surge in sales.

In the U.S. schools, students are taught about the Holocaust through the use of Maus, in which Nazis are shown as cats and Jews are drawn as mice.

The vote was held earlier this month, but the news of it spread this week as International Holocaust Remembrance Day was marked.

Conservative actions to change school curriculums include the banning of Maus. A number of red states have banned critical race theory from being taught in public schools, while books dealing with gender and sexuality have been banned from schools. The act signed by Donald Trump promoted patriotism and downplayed slavery in the nation's history.

Key Background

Art Spiegelman's relationship with his father, a Polish Jew who survived World War II, is the basis of the series. In 1980, the first chapter of Maus was published in a comics anthology, and was serialized in each subsequent issue until 1991, when the magazine shuttered. The only graphic novel to have ever won a Pulitzer Prize is Maus.
