Tom Brady: NFL great retires after winning seven Super Bowls

Breaking news

Tom Brady, one of the greatest players in football history, has retired at the age of 44.

The quarterback won seven Super Bowls in his career.

The five-time Super Bowl Most Valuable Player won six titles with New England before his final triumph with the Buccaneers.

His final game was a 30-27 defeat by the Los Angeles Rams in the play-offs, when his heroics narrowly failed to see the Bucs fight back from 27-3 down.

Brady had a year left on his contract with the Bolts and has talked about playing beyond his 45th birthday, which is a month before the start of next season.

He spent 20 years with the Pats and decided to end his playing career in the NFL.

As first reported by ESPN, Brady's decision to retire is based on several factors, including family and health.

'The greatest professional athlete we have seen'

Two-time Super Bowl champion Osi Umenyiora said that Tom Brady should be the first player in history to be in the Hall of Fame while he is still playing.

What this man has done is beyond belief. I can't say what the level of difficulty was for this man.

Every single year this guy has been doubted, he rises to the top. The greatest professional athlete we have ever seen is this guy. I am not just saying that to be hyperbolic.

The hardest position to play in sports is the quarterback, and this guy is winning over and over again.

More to come.
