The European Space Agency posted the pic on its website yesterday and the official TGO account said it was taken back in 2021.
The feature could easily be mistaken for a tree stump with rings. The patterns inside this crater reveal details of the Red Planet's history, too, as tree rings provide snapshots of Earth's past climate.
Even though the image wasn't a tree stump, space fans had fun imagining it.
One user commented that there is a T-Rex silhouette in the middle of the crater.
This isn't the first time people went crazy for a tree on the surface of Mars. A video of a tree stump captured in an image the NASA's Mars Curiosity Rover took was posted on a popular UFO-watcher channel.
It was just a rock, but fans and skeptics alike seemed to enjoy themselves in the comments, poking sarcastic fun of the discovery, or sharing excitement over their belief that there used to be trees on Mars.
Space exploration captures our imagination even when we don't think it's true.
