Testing iOS 15.4's New Face ID With a Mask Feature

The new feature that allows you to use Face ID while wearing a mask was introduced in the latest version of the software. Face ID with a mask doesn't require hardware like an Apple Watch for verification, and it's much more convenient in a world where many of us are still wearing masks on a regular basis.

Face ID with a mask is a setup option after updating to the latest version of the operating system. You can enable it right away with a new Face ID Scan, and from there, you can use Face ID while wearing a mask.

If you put your mask on, you will be able to see Face ID on the Lock Screen. Face ID with a mask is almost identical to Face ID without a mask, but it is not going to open from unusual angles because of the need for eye contact. You need to look right at your phone for Face ID with a mask to work, which is not always the case with standard Face ID.

The Face ID feature can be enabled later under settings if you didn't enable it at setup. If you plan to wear glasses while also wearing a mask, you should visit this section.

Face ID with a mask is the same as standard Face ID in terms of what can be verified. Face ID with a mask can be used for Apple Pay purchases and in lieu of a password in third-party apps.

Face ID with a mask can be found on the iPhone 12 and 13 models. The feature will not be available to you if you have an older phone. It is not clear if this is a temporary restriction or if Apple is planning to expand the feature to other devices in the future.
