Frank Lampard: Everton formally offer former Chelsea and Derby boss role as their new manager

The appointment of Frank Lampard as the new manager ofEverton is expected to be completed in the next 24 hours.

Contracts are being drawn up to bring the former boss to Goodison Park.

After a final round of talks with their candidates, Lampard became the leading candidate.

The Toffees spoke to several people, including the man who told Sky Sports News on Wednesday that he wanted the job.

Farhad Moshiri flew to London to hold talks with the candidates.

The club ninth in the premier league was the reason why he was out of work.

Prior to his time at Derby, he led to an FA Cup final and a top-four finish, but the Rams lost to Villa in the play-off final.

After they lost to Norwich in the FA Cup, the club had to replace their manager, who was sacked earlier this month.

Goodison Park had been run by the former manager for less than a year.

They are just four points above the bottom of the table having won one and drawn three of their last 14 matches.

He would have left the relative stability of Chelsea, which is owned by Roman Abramovich and run on a day-to-day basis by Marina Granovskaia, to go into a situation at Goodison Park.

The fans are very unhappy and so he has a major job on his hands, but the first thing he has to do is make sure that they stay in the league.

How are things going at the club?

Not good. The side is 16th in the league with 19 points from 20 matches, and will start the year with three losses.

Just days after the club allowed France international Lucas Digne to join the club, the final nail in the coffin of long-disliked manager Rafa Benitez was a 2-1 loss to Norwich.

Duncan Ferguson took temporary charge of the team but they lost to Villa on Saturday with Digne providing the assist.

There is a need for change. A plane flew over Goodison Park before the match calling for the departure of long-standing chairman Bill Kenwright. Time to leave.

Fans stayed behind to protest, chanting "Sack the board" and "We want our club back", as Bill Kenwright got out of the club.

A number of supporters congregating outside the Liver Building, where the commercial offices are based, before another protest took place on Wednesday night outside Goodison.

What are the issues at the club?

Few people at the top of the club trust those at the head of recruitment or scouting to make the right decisions.

The club have been owned by Farhad Moshiri since 2016 and the Iranian businessman certainly cannot be faulted for his financial backing, having already spent over half-a-billion pounds on transfers.

He increased his stake in the club to 94 per cent last week, but he has made poor decisions in the past. On Wednesday, fans voiced their objections to the potential new manager.
