A China Airlines cargo plane had a rough morning in Chicago.
This incident involves an 18 year old cargo jet that is operated by China Airlines and has the registration code B-18715. In the early hours of the morning, the plane flew a redeye from Anchorage to Chicago and then made a landing.
As is the case with much of the country right now, Chicago is dealing with some weather, as there was a lot of snow on the ground, which can be difficult to navigate. The jumbo jet ran into a bunch of ground equipment as it taxied to its arrival stand, hitting the two left engines.
The plane came to a stop. There is a video of the incident.
The data shows how the plane went off the taxiway. It seems like the pilots lost control of the plane after they had to make some sharp turns.
It remains to be seen what caused that. It's not unusual in winter to have icy conditions, but plowing through a bunch of baggage carts and other equipment is. In the video it is clear that the plane was taxiing at a very fast pace, which doesn't make sense for having to make turns in these conditions.
I'm curious to see how long it takes for this plane to fly again. I don't think these engine and structural repairs will happen in a day or two.
A China Airlines Cargo Boeing 757 sustained some serious damage at Chicago O'Hare this morning after landing from Alaska. Significant damage to the two left engines was caused by the plane plowing through some ground equipment. I'm curious to see what comes of this investigation, and how soon this plane is flying again.
What could have caused this?
