Baskin won a $1 million legal battle over the name, and Maldonado-Passage filed for bankruptcy as he couldn't pay his legal fees. Baskin was killed in a failed attempt to retaliate. The zoo closed in August 2020 after legal battles over the treatment of tigers.
The launch of a cannabis brand named Joe's Exotics was announced by Maldonado-Passage from prison. He made a licensing agreement with two people. A month before that, he auctioned off a collection of digital and physical assets ranging from his favorite gun to the jacket he wore on the show.
