Broncos to hire Nathaniel Hackett as head coach (1:08)

The Broncos are close to a deal with the Packers to have Nathaniel Hackett become their next head coach, according to Adam. There is a time and a place for this.

Nathaniel Hackett was formally introduced as the Denver Broncos' 18th head coach in franchise history on Friday.

He had been the Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator for the past three seasons.

The Broncos have had one of the league's most unreliable and inconsistent offenses over the last six seasons without a playoff appearance.

"Any offense that you have, it has to be maneuverable, has to be adjusted for who you have on our team," he said. You want the defense to cover the entire field and you have to take shots down the field. The people in the stands love that. I remember watching John Elway and it was where the system evolved.

Broncos general manager George Paton was quick to shoot down the idea that he had hired a new coach to help lure Packers quarterback Rodgers to Denver if he were to be traded.

Paton said absolutely not that Rodgers had anything to do with the hiring of Hackett.

One of the first orders of business for Hackett will be to kick-start an offense that has been one of the league's worst in recent years. The Broncos have averaged less than 23 points per game in the last three years.

We have a long way to go in this area. We need to improve on offense. Paton said that we need to score a lot more points.

The Broncos have averaged less than 20 points per game over the past six seasons.

If Paton included an enthusiasm incentive clause, the new coach would get it all Friday. In rapid-fire fashion, he said he and Paton would start grinding on player evaluations and hiring a staff as soon as possible.

The quarterback position will be a big part of the discussions about the roster in the weeks ahead, according to Paton and Hackett.

The team has started 10 different quarterbacks since the midway point of the 2016 season, with running back Phillip Lindsay starting in the no-quarterback game in 2020.

The Broncos had a second interview with Kevin O'Connell on Monday, and a second interview with Dan Quinn on Tuesday. The other interviews were canceled after speaking to Hackett all day Monday and a final discussion on Tuesday.

There was no reason to continue. Paton said he was sold. The group of candidates we interviewed were great. I spent a lot of time with him. I knew how I felt. I talked to the staff, I talked to the leadership, and I was wondering what we were doing. This is the guy for the Broncos.

I feel like this is a dream right now. This is unbelievable. It would be a huge understatement to say that I am excited.
