According to sources, the New York Giants are going to hire Buffalo Bills offensive line coach Brian Daboll as their new head coach.
Joe Judge was fired after two seasons after going 10-23. He was the third Giants coach to be fired after two seasons, following Ben McAdoo and Pat Shurmur, as the once-proud franchise has stumbled through one of the worst 10-year stretches in its history.
Now it is the turn of Daboll to stop the trend.
The house in New York was cleaned. Dave Gettleman retired after the season ended. The former assistant general manager of the Buffalo Bills was hired.
Five people were in the running for the job, including former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores, Bills assistant head coach/defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Giants defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. He told teams on Thursday that he would be returning to Dallas.
Each of the past two seasons, the Buffalo offense was ranked in the top five. Josh Allen was developed from an erratic, big-armed quarterback into one of the game's best young stars.
It was almost expected that this would be a hire because of the connection between the two men. From the moment Schoen was hired, Daboll was the favorite for the job.
The head coach is going to have to be someone that I can work with and that I can communicate with.
The only offensive coach the Giants had was Daboll. That may have helped him, as the franchise looks to get Daniel Jones the ball and fix the offense that is 31st in the league.
Sources said that Buffalo's passing-game coach and quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey is likely to become an offensive coach with either the Bills or Giants.
