Janet Jackson says in her new A&E docuseries that her first husband left her alone at a hotel for three hours after they got married.
During the first episode of the documentary, which aired Friday night, the singer talked about how their wedding day led to her suspicions that DeBarge was using drugs.
Jackson said that he would be right back. He didn't come back for three hours.
Jackson and DeBarge started dating when Jackson was 16 and DeBarge was in his late teens.
DeBarge joked that he didn't know why anyone would trust him. DeBarge said that they were both in love with each other and needed to block everyone else out.
Jackson finally addressed a decades-long rumor that she and DeBarge had a secret child, and you can read her comments here.
I couldn't keep a child away from their father. I could never do that.
Jackson got the blessings of her sister LaToya Jackson when she secretly got married to DeBarge in 1984. The marriage was nullified one year later. In her documentary, the singer says DeBarge's drug use led to his long absences.
She said that she is attracted to people that use drugs.
There are a lot of nights when I would go looking for him in the morning and early afternoon.
DeBarge was convicted of possession of a controlled substance in 2011. DeBarge was arrested on suspicion of having meth.
Jackson said in the documentary that when he found the pills, he would take them and try to flush them down the toilet, but we would roll around on the floor fighting for them.
She said that she cared so much for him, that she saw the good in him, and that she wanted that to take precedence over the ugliness. I was not the help that he needed.
The Janet Jackson documentary will premiere on Lifetime and A&E on January 28.
