Art Rooney II said Friday that Kevin Colbert will step down as general manager of the Pittsburgh Steelers after the NFL draft in April of 2022.
Rooney and Kevin have left the door open to have him fill an ongoing role after the draft. It is unlikely that a hire will be made until after the draft. We will be interviewing people. We have already interviewed two of our in-house candidates.
Mike Tomlin will be the only remaining member of the nucleus of the team. Rooney said that the role of the new general manager will not change, despite the fact that the team has a three-year extension on top of that.
Colbert has worked on year-to-year deals since the end of the season, and he has maintained that he will be around as long as Ben Roethlisberger. Roethlisberger announced his retirement on Thursday.
Khan, the team's vice president of football operations and business administration, and Hunt, the pro scouting assistant, are the top candidates for the job. Hunt has been with the team for 14 years, while Khan has been with the team for 21 years.
After a decade as the director of football operations, Colbert took over as general manager of the Steelers in 2010. He has been with the team for many years.
He was pro scouting director for the Detroit Lions from 1990 to 1999.
