Yes, It’s Clear The Book Of Boba Fett’s Biggest Problem Is Boba Fett

This week's episode of The Mandalorian reinforced what everyone has realized this whole time:

The person we wanted to be was the Mandalorian. The new guy with his own show is not the same as the new Boba Fett. The Mandalorian and Fennec Shand are both similar to Boba Fett.

How did we get here?

It should have been obvious to everyone that Star Wars did not need to bring back Boba Fett for any reason. Even though The Mandalorian had a different background and was a different character, he was still filling that role that many had always envisioned for Boba Fett, a bounty hunter shrouded in mystery.

The second season of The Mandalorian could not resist having Boba Fett in it. The decision was made to give him his own spin-off. The character fundamentally changed.

We wanted to see a Boba Fett-like character in The Mandalorian, but that's not what he is. His combat sequence is often weird. His decision-making process, like sparing enemies meant to kill him, seems out of character. Trying to gain control of the Tatooine underworld is not very compelling.

The best part of the series made him softer, but fans don't really want a softer Boba Fett. His fighting and tactics are not the only ones. He talks too much, takes his helmet off too often, and constantly reminds us that he is not a mostly silent badass that got mythologized by Star Wars fans for decades.

I don't blame Temuera Morrison. I think it was a risk to let the actor lead the entire series, and I am not sure if he is up to it. Morrison commented that the character talks too much and that he wishes Fett had been left more mysterious, so I think he understands that the script is all wrong for Fett. He's half joking, but it's true.

Fett is the only factor that matters here. The problem is that Fett himself has been handled in a way that is not good for him. The best episode of the series so far was the one featuring The Mandalorian, but I think it's possible that the show won't live to see season 2. I'm not sure if The Last of Us would have ever existed if Pedro Pascal hadn't been filming it.

I am curious to see what happens with Disney's other Star Wars projects, given that it appears they have gone 1 for 2 instead of 5 for 5. We will see if Obi-Wan and Ahsoka can handle their characters better than Fett can.
