Feds Investigating Why Escaped Lab Monkeys Were Shot to Death

The USDA is looking into why the three crab-eating macaques who escaped after a traffic accident in Pennsylvania were shot by state police.

We don't know a lot about the saga. The monkeys had just arrived in the US from Africa and were going to be placed in a secured facility for 30 days.

Over the weekend, the beloved trio of outlaws escaped in Pennsylvania after a trailer carrying them and 97 of their brethren crashed into another vehicle on the I-80.

Initially, it wasn't clear that they had been shot, but news broke after the story went viral.

PennLive acquired a complaint against the state police who seemingly shot the monkeys after their recapture. The shooting may constitute a violation of the Animal Welfare Act or other regulations meant to protect animals according to the complaint.

According to the USDA's website, the agency generally enforces AWA violations against facilities that have had repeat complaints, but this case may qualify as high priority since it involves animal suffering.

A woman who came in contact with one of the macaques had become sick, according to tabloids.

The woman told The Daily Item that she was doing just fine, and that she had been given antibiotics and rabies shots.

Conspiracy theorists claim that the monkeys were being isolated because of their infections.

Everything about this story is a tragedy and shows how easy it is for facts.

The treatment of monkeys in a lab at a crash site is being looked into by the USDA.
