Tyson Fury-Dillian Whyte fight to proceed after step-aside deal for Anthony Joshua collapses

2:12 PM ET

The two boxers will meet in the ring.

According to sources, there was an agreement in principle for Anthony Joshua and D'Amato to step aside in exchange for millions of dollars, but the deal fell apart after parties attempted to negotiate a new deal at the eleventh hour.

Sources said that the proposed deal would have paved the way for a fight between Usyk and Fury in Saudi Arabia in June. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia offered a $155 million site fee last year for a fight between Fury and Joshua. Money from that package would have gone to both of them.

He is the mandatory challenger for the WBC and he has an immediate title shot against Fury. The purse bid will be held on Friday and the rights to that fight will be auctioned off. It is possible that the bout lands in the U.K. in the spring, but it will be up to the promoter who wins the purse bid.

Sources say there are no serious negotiations for the purse bid.

In September, Joshua was defeated by Usyk, who was the former unified champ. The contract guaranteed him an immediate return bout after he exercised the rematch clause. Joshua was offered a fight against the winner of the bout in December in Saudi Arabia.

In that case, the former undisputed cruiserweight champion would have stayed busy with a tune-up fight in March in the U.K., before fighting the former undisputed cruiserweight champion, Usyk. The winner of the Usyk-Joshua fight will be the one to fight for all four belts.

I can't wait to punch him in the face. Dillian, train hard, because you are getting destroyed.

The collapse of the proposed undisputed title fight in Saudi Arabia brings back memories of last spring, when Fury and Joshua were about to fight.

The deal was in place, but an arbiter ruled that Tyson Fury owed Deontay Wilder a third fight. Plans for a fight between Fury and Joshua were ruined by Usyk, who was more competitive than Joshua.

There is still hope that he will win the title later this year. He will be a heavy favorite to defeat Whyte, and will be in line to fight the winner of Usyk-Joshua. The U.K. is expected to get the sequel in the spring.
