According to the peer-reviewed study, published in the Journal of Political Institutions and Political Economy in November, populist countries have higher excess deaths than other countries.

In non-populist countries, an additional 8.2 deaths from coronaviruses were recorded for every 100 deaths, compared to 18.6 deaths in populist-led countries.

The U.S., the UK, Brazil and India were identified as populist-governed by the study.

The deaths were caused by higher rates of movement from place to place in populist countries.

The authors of the study argued that populist governments were less likely to implement long-term pandemic policies and more likely to communicate messaging that downplayed the severity of the epidemic.

Populists are responsible for many avoidable deaths in the countries they govern and are the worst crisis managers.

Key Background

Populism is not tied to a specific side of the political spectrum. Right-wing populists swept the world in the years before the coronaviruses, with leaders like Donald Trump, Jair Bolsonaro and Boris Johnson winning power. A study last week found that populist leaders lost support after polling more than half a million people. According to researchers, public opinion of populist leaders fell because of the swine flu, a decline in polarizing attitudes and a desire for more stability.
