Farhad Moshiri is holding off on appointing a new manager as he continues to consider Frank Lampard.

In an increasingly chaotic process, further discussions are expected.

48 hours ago, he was in pole position after impressing in his interview.

A toxic reaction from the fans of his previous employer made him a leading candidate.

Wayne Rooney, the manager of Derby County, is also on the list.

It is emerging as a choice who would at least unite an increasingly disgruntled fanbase, and that is the man who finished fourth and reached the FA Cup final in his one full season at Chelsea.

The lengthy television interview that he did to try to appease fans failed to address their concerns about his credentials.

He was fired by Turkish club Fenerbahce in December.

Roberto Martinez, the first of five Goodison bosses sacked by Moshiri in May 2016 following fan protests, was blocked by the country when he tried to become the next manager.

Hundreds of fans gathered at Goodison Park on Wednesday night to protest against the club, after a sit-in and protests at the city centre headquarters.

There was anger and banners directed at the agent of the owner, who has been identified by fans as wielding too much influence over the owner.

One win in 14 league games has left them four points off the bottom of the table.

The Toffees have confirmed that they will be out for at least four weeks.

Delph picked up a thigh problem in training while Doucoure was forced off with a groin injury.
