Barcelona are in talks with Wolves over a move for Adama Traore, who is unconvinced by Spurs offer to use him in a variety of positions.
Traore would like to return to the club where he started his career after Barcelona offered him a loan move with an option to make a permanent deal.
Sky Sports News reported earlier this week that Spurs were closing in on a 20m deal for the player after their previous bid was rejected, but now it looks like Barcelona have moved ahead of them.
Traore came on for the final 15 minutes of the game and saw a goal ruled out by the VAR for being in an ineligible position.
At the end of the summer transfer window, Spurs were in talks to sign Traore. Despite the change of head coach from Nuno Espirito Santo to Antonio Conte, the interest remained.
Traore is out of contract in June of 2023 and a new deal has been on the table for 15 months with his current club keen to keep hold of him.
Sky Sports has an analysis by Adam Bate.
It was thought that the deal for Adama Traore was all but done and that the club would add further signings as well. They have a problem if they fail to land the Spain international.
The wing-back position was identified to bring more motivation to the position where Royal has not been able to beat a man. Traore's ball-carrying ability would have added a new element to the game.
It is being said that he never fancied the position. Bruno Lage only used Traore in desperation when trailing both Crystal Palace and Brentford, and last had a run at wing-back under Nuno Espirito Santo.
It's possible that the interest from Barcelona changed his mind. Catalonia has always been home to Traore, even after six-and-a-half years in England. He joined the youth set-up at eight years old and made his La Liga debut at 17.
The chance to return as an international player in his prime and ready to make an impact under his one-time team-mate is an opportunity that he will have wanted. He looks like he will get that chance. The search continues for Spurs.
Who will be moving in January?
The January transfer window closes at 11pm on Monday January 31.
