The US Coast Guard is searching for 39 people who went missing after a vessel capsized off the coast of Florida, with none believed to be wearing a life jacket.
According to the Coast Guard, a lone survivor has been rescued so far, but the vessel is believed to have capsized during severe weather Saturday night while traveling between Bimini in the Bahamas and Fort Pierce Inlet, Florida.
The Coast Guard was notified at 8 a.m. that the survivor had been picked up by a good samaritan. Tuesday morning.
The entire area between Bimini and Fort Pierce inlet is being searched by the Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard said in a statement that this is a suspected human smuggler venture.
The weather in the area will make the search and rescue more difficult. The rest of the week is expected to be cloudy with a high risk of rip currents along the Florida coast. The past few days have been colder than usual, with temperatures dipping into the mid-40s over the weekend in Miami. The passage between the Bahamas and Florida is known for being used for human traffickers and illegal migrant operations.
