According to sources, the Baltimore Ravens are trying to get Mike Macdonald, a former assistant to John Harbaugh, to be their next defensive coach.
Sources say a deal is expected to be finalized in the next few days. Macdonald has been replaced on the road recruiting by a graduate assistant coach.
The Detroit Free Press reported that the Ravens were targeting Macdonald.
Jim Harbaugh's Michigan team went from a 2-4 record in 2020 to a 12-2 record this past season, thanks to the stabilization of a defense that was led by Macdonald.
The Michigan scoring defense improved from 95 in 2020 to 8 in 2020. Michigan won the Big Ten for the first time since 2004 and beat Ohio State for the first time since 2011.
One of the most significant hires in college football last season was that of Macdonald at Michigan. Don Brown gave up big plays under his schemes. The Wolverines yielded 100 fewer yards per game in 2021, an average of 330.8, after giving up 434.3 the previous season.
Macdonald helped launch the candidacy of defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, who was a finalist for the award after finishing with 14 sacks and two forced turnovers.
The Ravens have been in existence for 26 years. After seven years in Baltimore, Macdonald joined the Ravens as an intern, before moving to Michigan last year. He was the inside linebackers coach for three seasons at Baltimore and was considered to be the heir apparent for the defense.
The sides were unable to agree on a contract extension and Don and Wink were fired by the Ravens. The Baltimore defense ranked in the top 10 in three of four seasons.
The Ravens defense finished 25th in the NFL last season. It was the worst defensive ranking since 1997.
Macdonald was interviewed for the Ravens defensive coordinator position. Four years later, it appears that Macdonald will get the chance to step into that role.
