Vitor Pereira exclusive: Everton managerial candidate on his interview for the job and hitting back at critics

It is a time for decisions as he waits to hear if he will be given the job as the next manager of the club.

In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports News, the 53-year-old said he had received good feedback after having talks with the owners of Goodison Park.

The first task for the new manager would be to install an organization that has been lacking at the club, which has fallen to 16th in the league.

There were more than one interview with different people at the club.

We talked everything. I talked to people in the club and on the board.

I gave them my point of view about the club and what I think about the team, because they asked me to come.

He was a candidate for the job twice before, but missed out on it.

He thinks his interviews with the decision-makers went well and that they were enthusiastic about his plans to play football.

The club was enthusiastic about what I proposed, which was an intensive game, a pressing game, and a game with possession.

We need to give the players and the team confidence. We need to get in touch with the fans again.

I thought they were very positive with the interviews, and that's what I proposed to them. The feedback from the interviews was positive.

He talked about his fond memories of watching a game at Goodison Park, saying the experience inspired him.

I remember Goodison Park as a fortress and the passion of the supporters.

This is something that appeals to me in this club. I think this is a historic club and the challenge for me is to approach the club to the fans, to get again that kind of spirit and fire on the pitch, like what I watched a few years ago.

I think the first decision a manager can make is to bring back the organisation, the way to press, the intensive game that I saw a few years ago in the club and in Goodison Park.

Frank Lampard is also thought to be under consideration for the sixth appointment since he took over the club.

When asked if he still wanted to be the manager of the club, the Portuguese admitted he was aware the club had other candidates and that this was a time for decisions.

While he has won trophies in Portugal, Greece and China, his potential appointment to Goodison Park has not been well received by all of the fans.

The strength of feeling against his possible arrival even saw graffiti being written on a wall at the stadium.

Everton fans have put up banners against the club's board while another wrote a graffiti message after it emerged Vitor Pereira is favourite to take over from Rafael Benitez at Goodison Park

He admitted that the message hurt. This is the first time in my career that I have seen these types of things. These kind of comments about me have never happened to me. My CV speaks for itself.

The club is not in a good position and the challenge for the new manager is to harness the passion of the fans.

I think the power of this club is due to the passion of the supporters. I remember when I watched the games ofEverton a few years ago, the supporters won sometimes.

The passion in football can be either positive or negative. This is a good time for a manager to bring back the positive passion for the supporters. I don't think this is a personal attack.

They don't know me very well, so they shouldn't judge me without looking at the eight trophies I have won as a manager. They don't know my work, they don't know me as a person, and they don't know my CV.

I worked in a lot of countries. We have several titles. You can't judge before you know the person.

The last few years the club didn't get good results and the fans are not happy.

I came with passion, with spirit, and with the intention to bring good football.

Vitor Pereira's exclusive interview with Sky Sports News in full

When did you first hear about theEverton job and how did you come to be in contention?

A few years ago, when I finished my work in Porto, I was introduced to Mr Bill Kenwright. We have a good relationship and the club and the board want me to come for a meeting. I had more than one interview. There are more than one people at the club. We talked about everything. I talked to people in the club and on the board. I gave them my point of view about the club and what I think about the team, because they asked me to.

What did you want them to do to turn their form around?

I remember Goodison Park as a fortress and the passion of the supporters. This is something that appeals to me in this club. I think this is a historic club and the challenge for me is to approach the club to the fans, to get again that kind of spirit and fire on the pitch, like what I watched a few years ago.

Is it possible that the club should be structured to make them rise up the league table?

I am not the manager, but I think the first decision a manager should make is to bring back the organisation, the way to press, the intensive game that I saw a few years ago in the club and in Goodison Park. I was inspired by the match at Goodison Park. This is the spirit, to see the passion of the supporters again, to see the intensity, and to make other teams feel that Goodison is a fortress. This is the way to play that I want to bring back to the club.

Speaking on the Gary Neville Podcast, Gary wonders where Everton go from here after making some 'odd, obscure decisions' like selling Lucas Digne before sacking Rafael Benitez two days later

What vibe did you get when you received your ideas?

I think they were enthusiastic about what I proposed to them: an intensive game, a pressing game, and a game with possession. We need to give the players and the team confidence. We need to get in touch with the fans again. They were very positive with the interviews and I proposed this to them.

What is the latest state of play for the club?

They have other candidates. This is a good time to make decisions.

Do they tell you that you are not the man to replace him?

Just to be calm and wait for the decision, and to be grateful for the interviews.

How long are they expecting you to wait after your last conversation with the club?

The feedback from the interviews was good and what we talked about was something we keep with us.

What about the fans' reaction? What about the reaction on social media?

They don't know me very well. They don't know my work, they don't know me as a person, and they don't know my CV. I worked in a lot of countries. We have several titles. You can't judge before you know the person. The last few years the club didn't get good results and the fans are not happy. I came with passion, with spirit, and with the intention to bring good football.

Farhad Moshiri wanted Champions League football at Everton

We were showing graffiti on a wall at Goodison Park that said "Pereira out" and "Lampard in". Does that hurt when you see it?

Of course. This is the first time in my career that I have seen these types of things. These kind of comments about me have never happened to me. My CV speaks for itself. The club is not in a good position. I think the power of this club is due to the passion of the supporters. I remember when I watched the games ofEverton a few years ago, the supporters won sometimes. The passion in football can be either positive or negative. This is a good time for a manager to bring back the positive passion for the supporters. I don't think this is a personal attack.

He was sacked by Fenerbahce after five months in charge and was subsequently demoted to the second tier of the Bundesliga. Do they have a point?

There are eight titles in different countries. It is not easy to get for everyone. Different countries are teaching young players. Porto is a club that forms top coaches and players around the world, and I started my career there. We can't have a career with everything positive. It was a difficult situation. You can't look for negative things.

Do you think the negative reaction to your appointment may affect the decision-making process?

This is something that I can't control. I worked under pressure for my entire career. I worked in clubs that couldn't draw a single game.

You are waiting for the club to make a decision. Is it true that you still want the job?

Yes, of course. I have no doubts. I did my work as a professional and now the decision is up to the club. I came from a meeting, did my work, and now the decision is not my to make.

Everton interim manager Duncan Ferguson says he is gutted for the fans after defeat against Aston Villa

How important is it that the appointment comes before the transfer deadline?

I am not the manager, so I cannot speak as one. If they decide on me as the manager, I can speak about these matters.

What message would you like to send to the fans of the other team?

All my career has been built with passion, with organisation, with competence, and this is what I can offer to the club. I give the clubs all of my money. I think about football for 24 hours. This is my life. My passion, my competence and the quality that I build in my career are what I can offer to the fans. A game with intensity, organisation and offensive spirit.

Would you be willing to have another conversation with him? What do you want to happen next?

If they want me, they must call me.

Do you think you'll be the next manager atEverton?

This is something I can't control. I am a professional and I will wait for a decision.

Is it fair to say that the premier league is a huge ambition for you?

Of course. I am certain that I will be in the premier league in the future.
