A new Harris poll shows that more Americans think that N95 masks are more effective against Covid-19 than they think, but they wear them less.

A poll conducted in January among 2,120 U.S. adults found that a majority of respondents believe N95 and KN95 masks are protective against the spread of Covid-19.
More than 75% of people think surgical masks are effective, and more than half think cloth masks are protective.
Only 29% of people said they wear a N95 or KN95 mask, compared to 33% who wear a surgical mask and 36% who use a cloth mask.
If price and availability were not an issue, some 62% of respondents said they would wear the higher-quality masks.

The rapid spread of the omicron coronavirus variant has made high-quality respirators regulated by the U.S., China and South Korea more important. Experts say cloth masks and surgical masks are less effective against it. The quality of surgical masks is better than cloth masks, but they aren't as well-fitting as N95s. Salt Lake County requires people to wear masks indoors and Los Angeles mandating employers provide them for workers and barring children from wearing cloth are two places where mask rules have been updated.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Americans should wear the most protective mask they can, that fits well and that they will wear consistently, but the agency has resisted calls to recommend people wear N95 or KN95 masks.
