When it was first announced, there wasn't any certainty as to whether or not Star Trek: Picard would be a long-legged series. The future of the series remains uncertain as it looks to second and third times around.
There is a preview for the upcoming second season of Picard in a magazine. Fans latched on to a moment in the preview where star Patrick Stewart told the magazine he is currently preparing to shoot a few more episodes of the currently-filming third season and is weeks away from wrapping the series. There is a belief that the way this is worded and Stewart's own interchangeable use of the words.
The magazine took to social media to push back on the idea that it had confirmed the show's conclusion, and CBS has yet to publicly comment. It would not be surprising if Picard's conclusion is marked by season three, since it was announced along with season two.
The intent with Picard was never to run as long as other ones on Paramount+. The intent for the series to run for a few seasons, rather than being a limited series, was discussed by Alex and Heather at New York Comic Con. The grand plans for the Star Trek franchise were announced at that time. Picard's second season is included in the five different series that will run on the streamer. With more Star Trek shows waiting in the wings for other series to wrap up, there are likely to be some shows among this. We don't know if Picard will be one of the first series to give way.
The second season of Star Trek: Picard will premiere on March 3.
