Chris Mack may not be at Louisville anymore.
According to Pat Forde, the Louisville Board of Trustees and its athletics board are set for a meeting on the men's basketball coach's future Wednesday that could result in a change.
The school is in negotiations to fire Mack, according to Jeff Borzello and Pete Thamel. Louisville has lost five of its last six games. The team has put together a series of increasingly listless efforts in recent weeks, including a season-low 52 points in Monday's loss at Virginia.
The Louisville home crowd booed in the loss to Notre Dame.
Mack told reporters after the game that he was frustrated as well. They care very much. We want Louisville to win. We are trying to do everything we can to improve.
Mack has been at Louisville for four years after nine years at Xavier. During his tenure, the Cards have not gotten out of the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Denny Crum led Louisville from 1971 to 2001 and then Rick Pitino took over from 2001 to 2017: the program had been a beacon of stability for 50 years. The team was coached on an interim basis by a former assistant after Pitino was fired, but they hoped to find their next leader in Mack a year later.
The results have not been followed. Mack has struggled to recruit at a high level, with Louisville currently ranked 42nd in the 2020 class and never landing a top 10 class. He has struggled to coach up the talent he has brought to Louisville, with the team finishing in the middle of the pack in the conference.
The administration is reaching a breaking point with the once-promising 10-4 start to 2021-22 falling apart.
