Bad News: Scientists Say Eating Too Many Edibles May Make Your Balls Shrivel Up

A new study suggests that eating marijuana may have adverse effects on your testicles, but it may be better for your lungs than smoking.

Researchers at the Oregon Health and Science University found that ingestible cannabis may have the same adverse effects as smoking cannabis.

The primate research center at OHSU gave a number of rhesus macaques cannabis for nine months. The monkeys had lower testosterone levels and experienced a decrease in testicular size.

Jamie Lo, associate professor at OHSU and senior author of the study, said in a statement that the effects appeared to get worse as the dose was increased.

The study's authors were quick to point out that their results are preliminary and that further research is needed to see if similar effects play out in humans as well.

The effects on fertility of cannabis has risen in tandem with its growing popularity as states move to legalized it for medical and recreational use.

The National Institutes of Health published a systematic review of studies that suggested weed can reduce sperm count and libido in both animals and humans, but also noted that more research needs to be done.

It's too early to tell if eating edibles will cause human testicles to shrink, but given the interest, we might just find out soon enough.
