A new image shows the James Webb Space Telescope in a sky full of stars.

The Rome-based Virtual Telescope Project used a 17-inch PlaneWave telescope to track the astronomer on a Paramount ME mount.

The image was taken just as it was arriving at the Earth-sun Lagrange Point 2, which is about 1.5 million kilometers away from our planet.

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope mission is live.

He said that the apparent motion of the James Webb Space Telescope was tracked by the robotic telescope. NASA says you may be able to spot the space observatory with binoculars if you know where to look.

The man is getting started. In the next five months, the telescope will be turned on and tested, as well as taking some engineering images.

The first science images from JWST are expected to come back in about five months, according to the deputy project scientist.

In the long run, Webb has an ambitious mission to study the early universe, figure out how fast our universe is expanding, and look at objects.

The telescope went to space after years of delays, but has been smooth sailing since. The deployment of the main mirror, which was a big milestone, concluded with only minor problems.
