The movie's disturbing twist about the child murderer shocked audiences, because of the performance by Fuhrman as Esther. Twelve years later, Fuhrman is set to reprise her role in the upcoming movie, and she is certain that she will shock everyone once more.
The final act of the original Orphan revealed that a serial killer is actually a nine-year-old with dwarfism. Fuhrman was praised for her ability to vacillate between Esther's child and killer modes. That seems to be the big draw that Paramount is pushing for First Kill, a movie set some time before the original where Fuhrman will play nine-year-old-Esther again without the use of any computer-assisted visual effects or wild.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Fuhrman spoke about loving the challenge of returning to play Esther in First Kill and how it will be one of the first films to feature a now-adult actor returning to play the role of a child.
Will Smith did a movie where they de-age somebody, but to reprise a role that he did as a kid, which has never been done before. We did it. We didn't use special effects or crazy makeup tricks. The movie works because you can't figure out how I look like a 9-year-old, but I do. It's really weird.
Anyone who has ever fallen down a makeup artist rabbit hole knows what a great job cosmetologists can do with the right tools. You can see how she might be able to get away with pretending to be a child in the right lighting or with a hat, especially in the age of series like PEN15 and movies.
Fuhrman was disturbed by her own transformation and it was difficult to convince herself that she could play an adolescent again.
The hard part was trying to be an adult.
There is no hard release date for Orphan: First Kill.
