MOTD Top 10: Premier League derbies, past and present

Erik Lamela scores for Spurs, Crystal Palace fans celebrate, Man Utd 0-5 Liverpool scoreboard
Is the north London derby, Palace v Brighton or the North West rivalry your favourite?

There is nothing quite like Derby day.

Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards will return in the spring with their latest series of the BBC Sounds hit, ranking their top 10s from an assortment of topics across the Premier League era.

We are giving you an early chance to get involved, by allowing you to pick your top three, with the trio seeing your choices before they record the show.

These games will always matter more to supporters than other games do, but it is amazing how much the occasion affects players, and how quickly you get sucked into the rivalry even if you haven't grown up with it. You feel the same way the fans do, said host Lineker.

We featured in quite a few.

Alan has played in a lot of Manchester derbies. He was a fan of the Second City derby when he was at Villa.

I played in the north London and Merseyside derbies.

1. Tyne-Wear derby

In the North East, there is always a big event.

The last meeting between the two teams was in 2016 when the Black Cats were in the third tier.

If you make a good tackle you are applauded almost as if you scored a goal. It is almost like playing a game on the street, according to ex-Sunderland and Inter Milan player Yann Mila, who thinks the fixture had a better atmosphere than the Milan derby.

16,654 people went to the Stadium of Light to watch the under-21 side beat the under-23 side in the EFL Trophy.

2. North London derby

The first thing players are told when they join the club is "just hate Spurs", according to an ex-Arsene defender.

The fixture began in the 1800s and became a true local derby in 1913 when the club moved to north London.

Harry Kane is the top scorer in the meetings with 11 while Adebayor is the top scorer with 10.

St Totteringham's Day was celebrated by fans of the club, but the last time that happened was in 2016

3. East Midlands derby

There are several derbies in the East Midlands, but the one that will be focusing on is the one between Forest and City.

The FA Cup fourth round game between the sides will be shown live on BBC One.

Lineker said that when he was a player for the Foxes, they used to have three derbies.

In a couple of weeks we will get to see that again when we meet Forest for the first time in eight years in the FA Cup.

It is nice to play against these lower league clubs occasionally and I am looking forward to going to the City Ground. It should be a cracking tie, as long as they win.

The best known derby in the East Midlands is the one between Derby and Forest.

4. Chelsea-Spurs derby

It is not the main derby for Spurs, but it always carries a bit of an edge.

The Battle of the Bridge was their most famous meeting in recent years and it ended Spurs' title hopes.

Nine players were booked for Spurs, which is the most in a single season of the premier league. Mousa Dembele was banned for six games for eye-gouging Diego Costa.

5. North West derby

Man Utd v Liverpool: Why the rivalry runs deep

The two most successful English sides, separated by only 32 miles, were always destined to have a rivalry.

For many fans of both teams, this is the biggest game of the season.

The last time they faced each other in the league was almost four years ago.

6. Chelsea-Fulham derby

One of the closest rivalries on this list is the one between Chelsea and Fulham, which is only half an hour away.

Since the 1970s, it has been a one-sided rivalry, with both teams having beaten each other once.

7. Manchester derby

For a long time it was Manchester United winning everything and City just hoping for a trophy.

It is not the same now.

Sir Alex Ferguson once called their rivals "noisy neighbours", but City have won eight trophies since.

8. West Midlands derby

The West Midlands derby is known as the Second City derby.

It goes back to 1879 when the two clubs from the opposite sides of the city played each other.

Jack Grealish was attacked by a Blues fan the last time they met in the Championship.

9. A23 derby

One of the least likely rivalries in the league is between Crystal Palace and Brighton.

Terry Venables and Alan Mullery did not get along when they were managers.

Mullery yelled "That's all you're worth, Crystal Palace" after he had hot coffee poured on him by Palace fans.

Seagulls was the nickname of the team because it rhymed with Palace's nickname Eagles.

10. Merseyside derby

The teams have played each other many times since they were formed in 1892.

In the last 20 years, it has been a one-sided derby with the last win coming in 1999.

Jamie Carragher andRobbie Fowler were both fans ofEverton.
