The Associated Press reported that residents in other Beijing neighborhoods are also being tested.

The repeated round of mass testing has led to complaints from some residents who will have to queue outside in the cold for the tests.

The most recent mass testing announcement has faced some backlash online with people complaining about disruptions to their lives and wasting testing resources.

78. The organizers of the Winter Olympics have reported the total number of Covid-19 cases since January 4.

Key Background

Beijing introduced new measures to contain the current outbreak. The residents of the risky areas were told not to leave the city and not to attend mass gatherings. China has a zero tolerance policy towards Covid-19, which seeks to eliminate all local spread. In the past year, China has used mass testing to stomp out emerging clusters of cases. The emergence of the highly infectious omicron variant in Beijing, which local authorities attribute to a package arriving from Canada, may pose a significant challenge towards this effort.

Tangent

The organizers of the Winter Olympics acknowledged on Tuesday that it would be difficult to implement a zero infections model. The organizers will try to make sure that there is zero spread and that positive cases are isolated quickly. The threshold for what is considered a negative Covid-19 result was changed by the organizers. To be considered negative, the value of 35 will have to be reported as a cycle threshold. China initially chose a higher threshold despite the fact that it was widely accepted in most countries. The required isolation time for close contacts of positive tests has been halved.

There is an increase in carbon dioxide cases in Beijing ahead of the Olympics.
