This is a bit of a shock as a site that regularly reaches out to movie studios to comment on things. A welcome one. Disney and the world's biggest film studio have responded to a potentially controversial problem. Trust us, it does not happen often.
This is how it started. Peter Dinklage is an award-winning actor, and on Monday he was featured in the latest episode of the WTF Podcast. The topics ran the gamut, eventually mentioning that West Side Story star Rachel Zegler was cast as Snow White in an upcoming Disney live-action adaptation. Dinklage had thoughts.
I was a little taken aback when they cast a Latina actress as Snow White, but you're still telling the story. It doesn't make sense to me. You're progressive in one way, but you're still making a story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together. What are you doing, man? Is there anything I have done to advance the cause? I think I'm not loud enough.
Dinklage is talking as a fan. The film has nothing to do with him. When the Hollywood Reporter asked for a comment, Disney responded that they were taking a different approach with the characters. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period, a spokesman told the trade, which also reported that the studio has been rethinking the dwarf characters since the earliest stages.
The film Snow White began development three years ago and only recently has it begun casting roles such as Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. The studio flagged any potentially offensive things from the original movie earlier in the development process. The fact that the studio was so quick to respond to Dinklage, and that they did so at all, leads us to believe that Disney is lying about a new approach to the dwarf characters. If Disney was caught off guard by these comments, they usually take a long time to reply. If at all.
The live-action Snow White doesn't have a release date yet, but it will be in 2023.
