A new Chromecast is being developed for people who don't own a 4K TV. Protocol states that the low-end device will include a remote and a maximum resolution of1080p.
The device, which could be named Chromecast HD with Google TV, is said to be capable of decoding the AV1 video codec, something the 4K-capable Chromecast with Google TV doesn't support at the hardware level. The device will probably cost less than the $50 Chromecast with Google TV because of the lower resolution output.
It's been three years since the third-gen Chromecast was unveiled. The $30 device doesn't come with a remote and doesn't offer native apps. It's probably time for a lower-end Chromecast with a remote and Stadia compatibility, given that both Amazon and Roku sell high-end streaming devices for under $50.
It's not the first time we've heard about a device with the codename "Boreal," but no specifications were mentioned.
It's not known if or when the Chromecast HD will be released with the Google TV. It doesn't seem quite splashy enough to be showcased at the annual fall hardware event, but the company has debuted some devices at its I/O developer conference, which typically takes place in May. There are rumors that the first Google- branded wristwatch could arrive around that time.
