At least eight people died in a crush outside the stadium where the Africa Cup of Nations game was being held.
The governor of the central region of the country said there could be more casualties.
There was a crush as people tried to get to the Olembe Stadium to watch the host country play their last-16 game.
Videos on social media show fans storming the stadium gates, while pictures show fans laying injured on the ground.
Children were among those caught up in the crush, while witnesses said it happened when stadium stewards stopped allowing people in.
Police and civilians rushed the injured people to the hospital from the crush. The hospital wasn't able to treat all of them.
The nurse said that some of the injured were in desperate condition. They will have to be evacuated to a specialized hospital.
Around 50,000 people tried to attend the match. The stadium was supposed to be more than 80 percent full for the game, but due to the coronaviruses, it was not meant to be.
The opening ceremony of the tournament was held at the Yaounde Olembe Stadium.
The Olembe Stadium was opened in September of 2021.
The last time a country hosted the event was 50 years ago. The tournament was taken away from it's intended host in the year of 2019) because of concerns over the readiness of its stadiums.
The stadium was one of the places that was under scrutiny. The final of the tournament will be held on February 6 at the main stadium.
The game on Monday night was decided by a single point.
