According to reports, the Chicago Bears are interviewing multiple head coaching candidates as they search for Matt Nagy's replacement.
According to Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, the team will request second interviews with Dan and Jim. It is scheduled for a second interview with Matt Eberflus on Wednesday.
The Chicago Bears are in the market for a new general manager, meaning this is a critical time for the organization, which has not won a playoff game in 11 years.
The first thing that stands out about the Eberflus pair is that they both have a defensive background, which may be surprising considering the Bears have been looking for stability at the quarterback position for a long time.
If the team wants to build around Fields, they may want to hire an offensive coach, but all three of the candidates who will be interviewed a second time have notable resume.
During his time as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, he had a 43-42 record and a Super Bowl appearance. He was the defensive coach for the Dallas Cowboys when they won the division title this past season, and he was the defensive coach for the Seattle Seahawks when they won the Super Bowl in the two previous seasons.
Eberflus was on the defensive staffs at Toledo and Missouri at the collegiate level before he became the Cowboys' linebackers coach. The Indianapolis Colts' defense finished tied for ninth in the league in points allowed in 2021, under his guidance.
Before he was a head coach at Wake Forest, Caldwell was an offensive assistant at Southern Illinois, Colorado, Louisville and Penn State. He was an assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach for the Miami Dolphins and the Indianapolis Colts.
His time as a head coach for the Colts from 2009 to 2011 and the Detroit Lions from 2014 to 2017 stand out. He made the playoffs in four of his seven seasons in Detroit. The Lions' best record since he was fired is 6-10.
If Fields lives up to expectations, whoever lands the job will be tasked with leading a franchise that may not be as far away as it indicated.
There is a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball, and the future of Green Bay Packers quarterback, and archrival, Rodgers is up in the air after another early playoff exit. Making the right hire at head coach could set the Bears up for success.
